Know Your Rights

Know your rights — the basics

A quick, plain-English rundown of things that are good to keep in mind. Handy to know before you ever need it.

This is not legal advice.

This page is for general information only — think of it as helpful reference material, not guidance for your specific situation. Laws change and every case is different. Reading this does not create an attorney-client relationship. If you’re facing a real legal issue, talk to a lawyer about the details.

If You’re Stopped by Police

Staying calm and knowing a few basics can protect you.

  • You have the right to remain silent. You can say, “I am going to remain silent and I would like a lawyer.”
  • Keep your hands visible and stay calm, even if you believe the stop is unfair.
  • You do not have to consent to a search of yourself, your car, or your home.
  • Ask, “Am I free to go?” If yes, you may calmly leave.

If You’re Arrested

What to remember once you are in custody.

  • Say clearly that you want a lawyer, then stop talking.
  • Do not sign anything or explain your side without an attorney present.
  • You are allowed a local phone call — memorize an important number.
  • Remember that officers can misremember or misquote what you say.

Immigration Encounters

Everyone in the U.S. has certain rights, regardless of status.

  • You have the right to remain silent about your immigration status.
  • You do not have to open your door without a warrant signed by a judge.
  • You have the right to speak with a lawyer before signing documents.
  • Carry any valid immigration documents you already have with you.

After a Car Accident

A few early steps can protect your health and your claim.

  • Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt.
  • Take photos of the scene, vehicles, and any visible injuries.
  • Exchange information but avoid admitting fault at the scene.
  • See a doctor promptly — some injuries appear hours or days later.
